Our Hifz students often ask, understandably, what all this memorisation is actually for. The Qur'an itself answers that question, and its purposes are wider than most of us first realise.
To Know Allah
Every command in the Qur'an rests on who Allah (SWT) is - His names, His mercy, His power. Without that foundation, worship risks becoming a hollow habit rather than an act of love and awe. Reading to know Allah (SWT) more fully is where obedience begins to flow naturally, rather than being forced.
To Guide Every Sphere of Life
The Qur'an is a map correcting our course in worship, family, dealings with others, and justice. Nothing in it is without purpose - every instruction connects, somewhere, to Allah's pleasure.
To Shape Character and Build Community
The Qur'an forms humility without weakness, mercy without permissiveness, justice without harshness. Its stories of the prophets are not entertainment but mirrors, training patience, truthfulness, and reliance on Allah (SWT). And its call is never only personal - enjoining what is right, standing with the oppressed, and organising charity are all part of a Qur'an-shaped life.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027) Learning it is only the beginning; passing on its benefit completes the circle.
