A Guidance Without Doubt
Allah (SWT) opens Surah Al-Baqarah:
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ٢
"This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2)
The right attitude begins here: letting the Qur'an define truth, rather than reading it looking for confirmation of what we already believe. If it corrects a habit, that correction is a mercy, not an inconvenience.
Trust, Timelessness, and Taking It Personally
Trust fully in what the Qur'an states, since human theories shift while Allah's words do not. Read it as timeless, carrying a universal principle in every passage, not only relevant to the moment it was revealed. And read it in the second person - when Allah (SWT) says "O you who believe," answer inwardly, "Labbaik."
The Prophet (SAW) said: "The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027) That standard begins with how seriously we take the words on the page in front of us.
Remembering Who Is Speaking
The Qur'an is not a text among texts - it is the speech of Allah (SWT). Holding that awareness while reading naturally produces humility and attentiveness.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students hearts that receive His Book with humility and let it lead rather than follow their own preferences. Ameen.
