A reflection on Surah Al-Asr 103:2 - what it means that all of mankind is in loss, and why so few are excluded from it.
It is a sobering thought to sit with: that without something specific in place, every person, regardless of effort or ambition, is described in the Qur'an as being in loss. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we find this ayah useful precisely because of how blunt it is.
A Universal Statement
Allah (SWT) says:
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ ٢
"Indeed, mankind is in loss." (Surah Al-Asr 103:2)
This is not addressed to a specific group of wrongdoers. It is addressed to mankind as a whole. Wealth, status, and worldly success do not exempt a person from this loss; time passes regardless, and unless it is spent in a way that has lasting value, it has simply been used up.
A Warning That Leads to Reflection
The Prophet (SAW) said: "There are two blessings that many people are deceived concerning: health and free time." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6412) Both feel unlimited while we have them, and both are precisely the resources this ayah warns us not to waste.
We use this ayah with our older students especially, not to discourage them, but to sharpen their sense of urgency, the discipline they build now in memorising the Qur'an, in good character, and in worship, is what stands between them and the loss this surah describes so plainly.
May Allah (SWT) protect our students from being counted among those in loss, and grant them lasting benefit from the time He has given them. Ameen.
