A reflection on Surah Al-Asr 103:3 - the four qualities that lift a person out of loss, and why faith alone is not one of the four.
After declaring that mankind is in loss, Surah Al-Asr does something remarkable: it names an exception, and that exception has become one of the most memorised verses at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy for good reason.
Four Qualities, Not One
Allah (SWT) says:
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ ٣
"Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience." (Surah Al-Asr 103:3)
Notice that belief alone is not enough to be excluded from loss. Four things are required together: faith, righteous action, encouraging others toward truth, and encouraging others toward patience. Faith without action remains incomplete, and even righteous action, kept entirely to oneself, misses the communal dimension the Qur'an insists upon here.
Believers Need Each Other
This is echoed in a hadith the Prophet (SAW) used to describe the community of believers: "The believer to another believer is like the bricks of a wall; each one supports the other." (Sahih al-Bukhari 481; Sahih Muslim 2585) A student's own consistency in Hifz becomes an encouragement to the classmate beside them; a family's patience through a hard season can strengthen another family going through the same.
We remind our students that their own progress is never only their own, it becomes, quietly, an encouragement to everyone around them.
