A reflection on Surah Al-Falaq 113:1 - why Allah (SWT) introduces Himself as the Lord of daybreak before naming any of the harms His servants seek refuge from.
Every night eventually breaks into morning. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we see this small daily miracle echoed in something bigger: a student who struggles through a difficult page of memorisation today can, with consistency, recite it with ease tomorrow. Surah Al-Falaq opens with exactly this pattern, light following darkness, and builds an entire surah of protection on top of it.
A Name Chosen With Purpose
Allah (SWT) instructs His Messenger (SAW) to say:
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ١
"Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak.'" (Surah Al-Falaq 113:1)
Al-falaq refers to the splitting open of the dawn, the moment Allah (SWT) tears the darkness of night apart to bring forth light. He could have introduced Himself here as Lord of the heavens or of all creation, as He does elsewhere in the Qur'an. Instead, He chooses a title that points to something every person witnesses without fail: the dawn arriving at its appointed time, every single day.
What the Dawn Teaches About Every Hardship
However long a night feels, it never lasts forever. Darkness gives way to light because Allah (SWT) has decreed it so, and that same power extends to every other form of darkness a believer faces, fear, grief, confusion, or hardship that feels as though it will never lift. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu'awwidhatayn three times in the morning and three times in the evening; they will suffice you in all respects." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3575) - a daily habit built on the same truth this ayah opens with.
We remind our students of this often. A surah that will not settle today may settle next week. A difficult season in a family's life is not evidence that Allah's help has stopped; it is simply night, and night always breaks.
May Allah (SWT), the Lord of every daybreak, bring ease after every difficulty our students and their families face, and may He be their refuge in every darkness. Ameen.
