A reflection on Surah Al-Bayyinah 98:5 - true excellence is rooted in sincerity for Allah's sake, not visibility to others.
In a world that constantly rewards being seen, the Qur'an quietly redirects the believer's attention elsewhere. The value of a good deed was never decided by who noticed it.
Devotion in Purity
Allah (SWT) says:
وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ
"And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion." (Surah Al-Bayyinah 98:5)
It is not the action alone that matters, but the intention behind it. The Prophet (SAW) warned, "If anyone wants to have his deeds widely publicized, Allah will publicize his humiliation. And if anyone makes a hypocritical display of his deeds, Allah will make a display of him." (Sahih Muslim 2986) When worship becomes performance, it loses the very thing that made it valuable.
Being Unseen, and Content With That
We remind our students that some of the most beloved acts to Allah (SWT) are the ones nobody else ever finds out about, revision done quietly, a good deed done without mention. Ihsan means being content to be unseen by people while fully seen by Allah (SWT).
May Allah (SWT) purify our students' intentions in every act, seen and unseen, and accept from them what is done purely for His sake. Ameen.
