A reflection on Surah Al-Kahf 18:84-98 - the just and humble king Dhul-Qarnayn, and what real leadership looks like in the Qur'an.
Every student who takes on a role of responsibility, leading a class discussion, helping a younger student with revision, is quietly being tested in leadership. Surah Al-Kahf gives us a striking model in Dhul-Qarnayn, a king granted real power who never let it define him.
Established, Not Self-Made
إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ سَبَبًا
"Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him from everything a way [i.e., means]." (Al-Kahf 18:84)
Allah (SWT) tells us plainly that He "established him on earth," a reminder that any influence a person holds, a kingdom, a platform, even authority within a family, is something granted, not self-made. Travelling east and west, Dhul-Qarnayn applied justice to wrongdoers and kindness to believers, firm without cruelty.
When he built a barrier to protect a vulnerable people from Gog and Magog, one so strong nothing could break it, he did not credit himself: "This is a mercy from my Lord." (Surah Al-Kahf 18:98)
Humility Wrapped Inside Ability
The Prophet (SAW) said, "Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you will be asked about his flock." (Sahih al-Bukhari 893; Sahih Muslim 1829) Leadership, in this understanding, is not measured by status but by the weight of responsibility carried with sincerity.
Even the mightiest wall Dhul-Qarnayn built, Allah (SWT) reminds us, will one day be levelled. Nothing built by human hands is permanent.
What This Means for Our Students
We want every student who is given a position of trust, however small, to see it as Dhul-Qarnayn did: a bridge to serve through, not a throne to sit on.
May Allah (SWT) make our students' influence, wherever He grants it, a source of justice and mercy for those around them. Ameen.
