Ninety-Nine Names: Calling on Allah Through His Most Beautiful Attributes

3 January 2027

A reflection on Surah Al-A'raf 7:180 - Allah's beautiful names are not just titles, but invitations to call on Him by exactly what we need.

Allah (SWT) has not left us to imagine who He is. He has told us, through His Most Beautiful Names. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we encourage our students to learn these Names not as a list to memorise, but as doors to call upon when they need exactly what each Name describes.

Call on Him By His Names

Allah (SWT) says:

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا
"And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them." (Surah Al-A'raf 7:180)

When seeking forgiveness, we turn to Al-Ghafur; when needing provision, we call upon Ar-Razzaq; when seeking strength, we remember Al-Qawiyy. The Prophet (SAW) said, "Allah has ninety-nine Names, one hundred less one. Whoever memorizes them will enter Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736, Sahih Muslim 2677) Scholars explain that memorising here means understanding and living by them, not reciting alone.

A Practice for Our Students

We encourage our students, when overwhelmed, to remember Allah (SWT) as Al-Hakeem, the All-Wise, whose plan is flawless; when feeling unseen, to remember Him as Al-Basir, the All-Seeing. Each Name meets a different need of the heart.

May Allah (SWT) draw our students closer to Him through every one of His Beautiful Names, and grant them the reward promised to those who truly know Him by them. Ameen.
