A reflection on Surah Yusuf 12:80-87 - Yaqub's (AS) grief over losing Yusuf, and his refusal to ever despair of Allah's mercy.
When a family at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy is going through real grief, we turn often to the story of Yaqub (AS), a Prophet who lost his sight from weeping and never once lost his hope in Allah (SWT).
Grief That Never Turned to Despair
After his sons returned with news that Binyamin, too, had been kept back, Yaqub (AS) responded not with rage but with what the Qur'an calls "beautiful patience":
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
"He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know." (Yusuf 12:86)
"He replied, 'I complain of my anguish and sorrow only to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.'" His grief was real. His eyes turned white from suppressed sorrow. Yet his complaint went only to Allah (SWT), never against Him.
Faith Does Not Remove Pain
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself wept at the death of his own son, saying, "The eye weeps, the heart grieves, but we only say that which pleases our Lord." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303) Islam does not ask believers to suppress grief, only to keep it within submission to Allah's decree.
Yaqub's (AS) final instruction to his sons carries the heart of the lesson: "And do not lose hope in the mercy of Allah, for no one loses hope in Allah's mercy except those with no faith." (Surah Yusuf 12:87)
What This Means for Our Families
We see this same steadiness in the parents who trust us with their children's Hifz journey through genuinely difficult seasons, financial hardship, illness, loss. Grief is allowed. Tears are allowed. What Yaqub (AS) teaches us is that even at its heaviest, grief should be carried to Allah (SWT) rather than away from Him.
May Allah (SWT) grant every grieving family the same beautiful patience Yaqub (AS) showed, and may He never let hope in His mercy leave our hearts. Ameen.
