A reflection on Surah Yusuf 12:88-101 - Yusuf's (AS) forgiveness of his brothers once he held complete power over them.
The moment a wronged person gains real power over the one who wronged them is a test of character few of us are ever asked to face. Surah Yusuf gives us the clearest example in the Qur'an, and it is one we return to often with our older students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy.
"There Is No Blame on You Today"
Standing before his brothers as Egypt's minister, having endured a well, slavery, and imprisonment because of them, Yusuf (AS) finally revealed himself:
قَالَ لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ يَغْفِرُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
"He said, "No blame will there be upon you today. May Allāh forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful." (Yusuf 12:92)
"There is no blame on you today. May Allah forgive you! He is the Most Merciful of the merciful!" He did not dwell on their scheming. He called it only "ignorance," softening the memory rather than reliving it, and he prayed for their forgiveness rather than demanding an apology.
A Trial at Every Stage
Yusuf (AS) faced four escalating tests across the surah: patience in the well, resisting temptation in prison, forgiving his brothers when he had every right to justice, and remaining humble once success finally arrived. The last of these, remembering Allah (SWT) in prosperity, is often the hardest.
Yaqub (AS) later prayed for his own sons' forgiveness too, echoing the Qur'an's teaching that "whoever pardons and thereby makes reconciliation, then his reward is due from Allah." (Surah Ash-Shura 42:40)
Teaching This to Our Students
We want our students to know that real strength is shown not when we are powerless to respond, but when we have every means to and choose mercy instead. That is the lesson written into Yusuf's (AS) life at its highest point.
May Allah (SWT) give our students hearts as forgiving as Yusuf's (AS), especially when they hold the advantage. Ameen.
