A reflection on Surah Al-Baqarah 2:186 - Allah's (SWT) closeness to those who call on Him, and why His self-sufficiency purifies our intention in worship.
Students sometimes ask why they should worship sincerely if Allah (SWT) does not need their worship at all. The pairing of two of His Names answers this beautifully.
Near to Whoever Calls
وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لِى وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِى لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ
"And when My servants ask you, [O Muḥammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:186)
Allah (SWT) says that when His servants ask about Him, He is indeed near, responding to the call of the caller when they call upon Him, so let them respond to Him and believe in Him, that they may be rightly guided. Al-Qarib, the Near, describes a closeness that is pure mercy, not dependence.
Worship That Benefits the Worshipper, Not Allah (SWT)
Allah (SWT) is also al-Ghani, Free of All Need; He does not need our worship for Himself. Understood together, these two Names purify intention: since Allah (SWT) needs nothing from us, any sincerity in worship is entirely for our own benefit, transforming the one who worships rather than adding anything to Him.
We remind our students that Allah (SWT) hears them just as closely whether they are praised by people or entirely unseen. May Allah (SWT) draw our students near to Him and purify their worship of any need for anyone's approval but His. Ameen.
