A reflection on Surah An-Nisa 4:40 - how the Qur'an weaves Allah's (SWT) perfect justice together with His expansive mercy.
Discipline in a school setting can tip too far in either direction, too harsh, or too lenient. The Qur'an models a better balance by weaving Allah's justice and mercy together rather than choosing between them.
Not Even an Atom's Weight of Wrong
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ ۖ وَإِن تَكُ حَسَنَةً يُضَـٰعِفْهَا وَيُؤْتِ مِن لَّدُنْهُ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
"Indeed, Allāh does not do injustice, [even] as much as an atom's weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward." (Surah An-Nisa 4:40)
Allah (SWT) tells us that He does not do injustice, even of the weight of an atom, and if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward. Allah's justice restores balance and safeguards the oppressed, while His mercy expands reward and opens the door to repentance before accountability arrives.
Attributes That Complete Each Other
Justice in the Qur'an reassures the wronged and warns the wrongdoer. Mercy offers a way out before the door closes. The two are never in competition; they complete one another, and a believer is meant to hold both together rather than lean entirely on one.
We try to teach our students, and remind ourselves as teachers, that firmness and mercy are not opposites; the best correction carries both. May Allah (SWT) help our students hold justice and mercy together, in how they treat others and in how they understand Him. Ameen.
