Learning by Company: Why Suhba Still Matters

We can learn almost anything from a screen, yet character is caught from people. A reflection on suhba, the Islamic tradition of learning by company, and why the teacher-student circle still matters at DSQA.

Today a child can learn almost anything from a screen. Recitation, fiqh and lectures from teachers around the world are one tap away. Yet most of us know that character is not downloaded. We catch it from people we sit with.

At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, this is something we think about often. DSQA exists to teach the Qur'an well, and part of teaching it well is understanding how people have always been shaped by it.

What Suhba Means

Suhba means companionship: sitting in the company of a teacher, watching how they live, being gently corrected, and being prayed for. It is learning by presence, not only by information.

This is how the Companions (RA) were formed. They did not only hear rulings from the Prophet (SAW). They sat with him ﷺ, saw how he prayed, spoke and treated people, and were changed. For the early Muslims this needed no debate. It was simply how a person became a believer of character.

Allah (SWT) points to this in the Qur'an:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ

"O you who believe, fear Allah and be with the truthful." (Surah At-Tawbah 9:119)

The Prophet (SAW) also said: "A person is on the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look at whom he befriends." (Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami' at-Tirmidhi)

The Teacher in the Classroom

A Qur'an teacher at DSQA does far more than correct makharij and tajweed. Recitation, adab and character come together in the relationship between teacher and student. The child hears how the teacher recites, sees how they greet, how they handle a mistake, and how they stand for salaah.

Much of this is never written on a board. It is absorbed, quietly, over many months of sitting together.

What Parents and Students Can Do

Keep a consistent teacher where you can. Trust grows with time, and a child learns most from someone who knows them well.

Be present in the circle: arrive on time, sit with respect, and listen even when it is not your turn. Then watch your teacher. Notice how they pray, how they speak, and how they treat people. That is a lesson no screen can give.

Parents, speak well of the teacher in front of your child and ask what they noticed, not only what page they reached, in-shaa-Allah.

O Allah, grant our children righteous teachers and righteous companions, and make us among those who are with the truthful. Ameen.
