I Complain Only to Allah: The Power of Letting Go

26 December 2026

Closing our reflection on tawakkul - Surah Yusuf 12:86 and Ya'qub's (AS) example of grief that broke toward Allah, not away from Him.

We close this short reflection on tawakkul the way it is best understood: not as an idea, but as a posture of the heart under real strain. Ya'qub (AS), grieving the loss of his son Yusuf (AS), gives us the clearest example.

Grief That Turns Toward Allah

قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
"He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know." (Yusuf 12:86)

Ya'qub's (AS) heart broke, but it broke toward Allah (SWT), never away from Him. That distinction is the whole of tawakkul.

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim said that whoever truly knows Allah (SWT) finds peace in His decree more than in his own desires. Letting go, in this sense, is not giving up; it is releasing a grip on what was never ours to control.

Nothing Reaches Us That Allah Did Not Write

The Prophet (SAW) said, "Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to do something to benefit you, you would never get any benefit except that Allah had written for you... The pens are lifted, and the pages are dried." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2516) This knowledge is meant to bring rest, not resignation.

Carrying This Forward

Across these reflections on tawakkul, from birds that fly out trusting provision, to Musa (AS) stepping toward the sea, to Ya'qub's (AS) grief carried to Allah (SWT) alone, the lesson stays the same: our part is effort and sincerity; the outcome belongs to Allah (SWT).

May Allah (SWT) grant our students and their families hearts that release their worries to Him completely, and may He settle every affair that feels unsettled today. Ameen.
