A reflection on Surah Al-Mulk 67:19 - the birds in flight as a quiet daily sign of Allah's (SWT) sustaining care.
Some of the Qur'an's most powerful reminders point to what is right in front of us, easy to overlook precisely because we see it every day. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we encourage our students to notice these everyday signs, not only the dramatic ones, as they work through Surah Al-Mulk.
A Sign Overhead
أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ إِلَى ٱلطَّيْرِ فَوْقَهُمْ صَـٰٓفَّـٰتٍ وَيَقْبِضْنَ ۚ مَا يُمْسِكُهُنَّ إِلَّا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍۭ بَصِيرٌ ١٩
"Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing." (Surah Al-Mulk 67:19)
A bird in flight looks effortless, yet nothing about flight is automatic. Allah (SWT) points to this ordinary sight as evidence of His care: it is Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful, who holds every bird aloft, moment to moment, with nothing else sustaining it.
Ordinary Signs, Extraordinary Care
This ayah teaches believers to look for Allah's care in the world around them, not only in moments of crisis. If something as small as a bird's flight depends entirely on His mercy, then so does everything else in our lives, our health, our provision, our safety, even when we are not consciously aware of it.
We remind our students that this same attentiveness belongs in how they view their own progress through the Qur'an. Every page memorised, every difficulty overcome, is itself sustained by the same Ar-Rahman who holds the bird in the sky.
May Allah (SWT), the Most Merciful, continue to hold and sustain our students in every part of their journey, seen and unseen. Ameen.
