Guardians Before and Behind: The Angels Watching Over Us

30 December 2026

A reflection on Surah Ar-Ra'd 13:11 - the angels appointed to protect every believer by Allah's command, and what that means for how we live.

How many times has a person been spared from harm without ever knowing it? This unseen protection is not chance. The Qur'an tells us it comes through angels appointed by Allah's (SWT) command.

Protection That Never Fails

Allah (SWT) says:

"For him are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah." (Surah Ar-Ra'd 13:11)

Unlike worldly protectors, who tire or fail, these guardians never neglect their task. The Prophet (SAW) described their rhythm: "Angels take turns among you by night and by day, and they all assemble at the dawn and afternoon prayers." (Sahih al-Bukhari 7429; Sahih Muslim 632)

Comfort and Accountability Together

We remind our students that this truth carries two lessons at once: comfort, because they are never truly alone, and accountability, because their words and actions are never unwitnessed. We encourage them to hold onto their Fajr and Asr prayers especially, the very moments the angels gather to report, and to recite Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) before sleeping, as the Prophet (SAW) taught it invites an angel's protection through the night.

May Allah (SWT) keep His guardians close to our students in every step, and may their awareness of being watched draw them closer to Him. Ameen.
