A reflection on Surah Al-Mulk 67:8 - the reminder that Allah (SWT) never punishes a people until a warner has first reached them.
Justice runs through Surah Al-Mulk even in its most severe descriptions. This ayah shows that clearly, in the form of a question asked to every group entering the Fire.
A Question With Only One Honest Answer
Allah (SWT) says:
تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ ٱلْغَيْظِ ۖ كُلَّمَآ أُلْقِىَ فِيهَا فَوْجٌ سَأَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَآ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذِيرٌ
"It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?"" (Surah Al-Mulk 67:8)
Every time a group is thrown into Hell, its keepers ask whether a warner ever came to them. The question itself is proof of Allah's justice: He does not punish a people until a messenger has been sent to warn them. Hell's own rage, the ayah suggests, reflects the seriousness of Allah's displeasure - not something to take lightly.
Taking the Warnings We Receive Seriously
We remind our students that warnings reach them too, in far gentler forms: a teacher's correction, a verse that stings the conscience, a parent's advice. Considering the consequences of our choices, while a warning is still just a warning and not yet a regret, is exactly what this ayah calls for.
May Allah (SWT) protect us from ever needing to answer this question with regret. Ameen.
