Closing our reflection on Surah Al-Insan with 76:23-31 - how the surah balances human effort with total reliance on Allah's mercy.
Surah Al-Insan began with a person who did not exist and closes with a servant who has learned to choose Allah (SWT) while relying entirely on His mercy. It is a fitting place to end our reflection on this surah with our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy.
Patience Sustained by Worship
The Prophet (SAW) is commanded to remain patient with Allah's decree, and immediately after, to sustain that patience through remembrance:
وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا
"And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening" (Surah Al-Insan 76:25)
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَٱسْجُدْ لَهُۥ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا
"And during the night prostrate to Him and exalt [i.e., praise] Him a long [part of the] night." (Surah Al-Insan 76:26)
Patience is not passive waiting, it is steadfastness fed by consistent worship.
Two Truths Held Together
The surah then reaches one of its most balanced statements:
إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا
"Indeed, this is a reminder, so he who wills may take to his Lord a way." (Surah Al-Insan 76:29)
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا
"And you do not will except that Allāh wills. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise." (Surah Al-Insan 76:30)
People are responsible for choosing guidance, and Allah (SWT) is the One who grants the success to follow it. This balance protects the heart from two dangers, pride, because guidance is ultimately a gift, and despair, because Allah (SWT) continues opening the door of mercy.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "No one's deeds will enter him into Paradise... Not even me, unless Allah envelops me in His mercy." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5673)
A Fitting Close to the Surah
We hope our students strive with real sincerity in their Hifz journey, and at the same time never forget that their entry into Paradise ultimately depends on Allah's mercy, not deeds alone.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students the sincerity to strive and the humility to rely on His mercy above all else. Ameen.
