A reflection on the hadith of Ihsan - what it means to worship and act with the awareness that Allah (SWT) sees every deed, seen or unseen.
The quality of a deed is not measured only by whether it was done, but by the awareness carried while doing it. That awareness is the heart of Ihsan.
Worship As If You See Him
The Prophet (SAW) defined it directly:
"Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not achieve this state of devotion, then take it for granted that Allah sees you." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4777)
Allah (SWT) affirms this closeness:
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّٱلَّذِينَ هُم مُّحْسِنُونَ
"Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good." (Surah An-Nahl 16:128)
Ihsan transforms ordinary moments, patience chosen over frustration, honesty chosen over convenience, effort in worship even when tired, into something extraordinary, simply because Allah (SWT) is watching.
How We Try to Teach It
We remind our students in the classroom and on the musalla that Ihsan is not waiting for applause. Whether their revision is checked by a teacher or not, whether anyone is watching or not, the standard stays the same, because the One who truly matters always is.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students the awareness of Ihsan in every part of their lives, and count them among the Muhsineen. Ameen.
