A reflection on Surah Al-Baqarah 2:83 - speaking good words at home, and why gentle speech matters for the children who hear it.
Many homes are shaped less by big decisions and more by the small words exchanged every day. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we see how a child's own speech, patient or sharp, often mirrors what they hear at home.
Speak Good to People
وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ لَا تَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا وَذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَقُولُوا۟ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنكُمْ وَأَنتُم مُّعْرِضُونَ
"And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allāh; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakāh." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing." (Al-Baqarah 2:83)
Among the covenants Allah (SWT) mentions is a simple instruction: speak good to people. Not only truthful words, but kind, healing, and dignified ones. The Prophet (SAW) modelled this in his own home, never shouting, mocking, or dismissing his wives, listening fully and validating what they felt.
Allah (SWT) compares a good word to a good tree in Surah Ibrahim: words are seeds. Kindness planted grows trust; sarcasm planted grows resentment.
Silence Can Be Wisdom
The Prophet (SAW) said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018) Sometimes the most powerful communication in a tense moment is a wise pause, not to punish, but to return once calm.
What We Hope Our Students Absorb
A home where speech is gentle, even during disagreement, gives a child a living example of ihsan, excellence, that no classroom lesson alone can teach.
May Allah (SWT) place gentleness on the tongues of every household we serve, and may our students grow up hearing words that heal rather than wound. Ameen.
