A reflection on Surah An-Nas 114:6 - why the Qur'an's final ayah widens the warning from unseen whispers to the influence of the people around us.
Who a student sits with during break time, who they message after school, matters more than it might seem. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we take this seriously, and Surah An-Nas ends by confirming exactly why.
Not Only From the Unseen
Allah (SWT) closes the surah with:
مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ ٦
"From among the jinn and mankind." (Surah An-Nas 114:6)
The whisperer is not only from the jinn. Whispers can also come through people, sometimes obviously, sometimes through repeated exposure that shapes a person without their noticing. A person may be encouraged toward heedlessness, pride, or worldly obsession not through direct instruction, but simply through the conversations and company they keep every day.
The Prophetic Example on Companionship
The Prophet (SAW) gave a vivid picture of this: "The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the seller of musk and the blacksmith's bellows. The seller of musk may either give you some perfume, or you may buy some from him, or at least enjoy a pleasant smell from him. As for the blacksmith's bellows, they may burn your clothes, or you may be exposed to their unpleasant smell." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5534; Sahih Muslim 2628)
We encourage our students, and their families, to weigh company as carefully as they weigh anything else that reaches the heart. The Qur'an's final surah takes this seriously enough to close the entire Book with it.
May Allah (SWT) surround our students with righteous company, and protect them from every harmful influence, seen or unseen. Ameen.
