A reflection on the Prophet's (SAW) teaching that a few words of remembrance are light to say but heavy in reward.
We often tell our students that the shortest du'a can outweigh the longest silence. Islam places remarkable value on words that take only seconds to say but carry lasting reward.
Remembering Allah (SWT) Often
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجْعَل لِّىٓ ءَايَةً ۖ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَـٰثَةَ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا رَمْزًا ۗ وَٱذْكُر رَّبَّكَ كَثِيرًا وَسَبِّحْ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِبْكَـٰرِ
"He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."" (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:41)
Allah (SWT) instructs His servant to remember his Lord much, and to glorify Him in the evening and the morning. Even a Prophet was commanded to keep his tongue active in remembrance, showing that dhikr is never something a believer outgrows.
Light on the Tongue, Heavy on the Scale
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Two words are light on the tongue, heavy on the scale, and beloved to the Most Merciful: SubhanAllahi wa bihamdih, SubhanAllahil-Adheem." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6682) Such phrases cost a believer nothing in effort, yet Allah (SWT) has made them weighty on the Day their scales are measured.
We encourage our students to keep a few of these phrases on their tongue between pages of revision, treasures that require no special moment, only a moment's intention. May Allah (SWT) fill our students' scales with words that were light to say and heavy in reward. Ameen.
