A reflection on Surah Al-Asr's third requirement - advising one another toward truth, and why this cannot be done alone.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, some of the most valuable reminders our students receive do not come from a teacher at the front of the class, but from a classmate quietly correcting a mistake in recitation, or gently reminding a friend not to skip a prayer. Surah Al-Asr's third requirement is built entirely on this.
Truth Is Meant to Be Shared
Surah Al-Asr names those who "advised each other to truth" (تَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ) among those excluded from loss. This is a mutual verb, advising one another, not simply holding truth privately. Faith and good deeds are necessary but not sufficient on their own; the Qur'an insists that truth must also be shared, gently and sincerely, between believers.
A Community, Not Isolated Individuals
This mirrors the hadith already central to Surah Al-Asr's message of mutual support: "The believer to another believer is like the bricks of a wall; each one supports the other." (Sahih al-Bukhari 481; Sahih Muslim 2585) A wall built of bricks that never touch each other is not a wall at all. In the same way, a community of believers who each hold truth privately, without ever encouraging one another toward it, falls short of what this surah asks for.
We encourage our older students to take this seriously with the younger ones, a kind correction, a shared reminder about salah or good character, is itself an act that this surah counts among what saves a person from loss.
