A reflection on Surah Al-Isra 17:32 - why Islam guards against approaching a wrong before it happens, not only forbidding the act itself.
Many missteps begin small: a moment's curiosity, an unchecked impulse. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we try to teach our students that character is built in these small, ordinary moments long before any major decision arrives.
Guarding the Approach, Not Just the Act
Allah (SWT) says:
وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَـٰحِشَةً وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًا
"And do not approach unlawful intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way." (Surah Al-Isra 17:32)
Allah (SWT) does not only forbid the act. He forbids approaching it, protecting believers from even the path that leads there.
Yusuf's (AS) Example
When temptation approached Prophet Yusuf (AS) directly, he turned away and said, "I seek refuge in Allah." (Surah Yusuf 12:23) His turning away was not weakness. It was the clearest kind of strength, choosing obedience over impulse in the exact moment it mattered.
Small Restraint, Real Direction
We encourage our students to notice how a small choice, closing a tab, stepping away from a conversation, changing direction, quietly shapes the person they are becoming. Restraint practised in small moments builds the discipline needed for larger ones.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students the strength of Yusuf's (AS) example whenever they face a small test of restraint. Ameen.
