Closing our reflection on Surah Al-Asr - the four questions every person will be asked about the time, knowledge, wealth, and body Allah (SWT) gave them.
Surah Al-Asr is only three ayat, yet it maps out, in miniature, an entire way of living: an oath by time, a warning of loss, and four qualities that save a person from it. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we close our reflection on this short surah by looking at where all of this eventually leads.
Every Life Will Be Measured
The Prophet (SAW) said: "The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked about his life and how he spent it, his knowledge and how he acted upon it, his wealth and how he earned and spent it, and his body and how he used it." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2417) This hadith reads almost as a commentary on Surah Al-Asr itself, time (his life), righteous deeds (his knowledge acted upon), truth and patience shared with others (how he treated what Allah (SWT) gave him).
A Short Surah, A Lifelong Question
Imam Ash-Shafi'i is reported to have said that if people reflected deeply on this surah alone, it would be sufficient for them. Whether or not the attribution is exact, the sentiment fits: four ayat contain an oath, a warning, and a complete framework for a life that avoids loss.
We hope our students carry this framework with them long after they leave our classrooms, that the time Allah (SWT) has given them is spent in belief, righteous deeds, and mutual encouragement toward truth and patience.
May Allah (SWT) make our students among those who are not counted in loss, and grant them a life that will be answered for with ease. Ameen.
