The Lord, King, and God of Mankind: Knowing Allah Before Naming the Danger

23 September 2026

A reflection on Surah An-Nas 114:1-3 - the three names Allah (SWT) introduces Himself with before ever describing the whisperer.

Before we teach our students how to respond to a difficulty, we try to remind them who Allah (SWT) is. Surah An-Nas follows exactly this order, and it is one of the most beautiful patterns in the whole Qur'an.

Three Names, Arranged With Wisdom

Allah (SWT) introduces Himself through three names before describing any danger at all:

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ١ مَلِكِ النَّاسِ ٢ إِلَـٰهِ النَّاسِ ٣
"Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind.'" (Surah An-Nas 114:1-3)

He is first the Lord (Rabb), the One who creates, nurtures, and sustains every person. He is then the King (Malik), the One whose authority nothing escapes. And He is finally the God (Ilah), the One alone deserving of worship. Each name builds on the one before it, moving from care, to authority, to the very reason a believer turns to Him at all.

Knowing Allah (SWT) Comes First

Only after establishing who Allah (SWT) is does the surah go on to describe the whisperer. This order matters. The Prophet (SAW) taught a young companion the same principle: "Young man, I shall teach you some words: Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him before you." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2516)

We try to teach our students this same foundation before every other lesson, knowing Allah (SWT) properly is what makes seeking refuge in Him meaningful, rather than a formality repeated without understanding.

May Allah (SWT), the Lord, the King, and the God of all people, be known and trusted by every student in our care. Ameen.
