The Hidden Fire of Envy: What Surah Al-Falaq Teaches About Hasad

21 September 2026

A reflection on Surah Al-Falaq 113:5 - why envy is described as a fire that consumes good deeds, and how gratitude protects the heart from it.

Among students who spend years side by side memorising the same Book, comparison can creep in quietly, who sealed a surah first, whose recitation sounds smoother. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we try to name this early, because Surah Al-Falaq closes its list of refuges with exactly this danger.

More Than Admiration

Allah (SWT) says:

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ٥
"And from the evil of an envier when he envies." (Surah Al-Falaq 113:5)

Hasad is not simply noticing a blessing someone else has. It is resenting Allah's favour upon them and wishing it would disappear. That is why it is so destructive: at its root, envy is not a problem with people, but a problem with the heart's relationship to Allah's decree. The envier becomes preoccupied with what others were given instead of grateful for what they themselves already hold.

A Fire That Consumes Good Deeds

The Prophet (SAW) said: "Beware of envy, for envy consumes good deeds just as fire consumes firewood." (Sunan Abi Dawud 4903) That image is deliberately severe, envy does not simply feel unpleasant, it burns away the very good a person has built.

We try to teach our students that every person's provision, ability, and pace of memorisation is part of a decree known perfectly by Allah (SWT). A student's own progress is not measured against a classmate's; it is measured against their own effort and their own trust in what Allah (SWT) has apportioned them.

May Allah (SWT) purify our students' hearts from envy, and fill them instead with gratitude for what He has already given them. Ameen.
