The Hidden Disease: What Our Words Reveal About the Heart

16 January 2027

A reflection on Surah Qaf 50:18 - every word we speak is recorded, and what we say about others often reveals what lies unresolved within us.

The tongue rarely lies about the heart behind it. When our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy learn adab alongside Qur'an, one of the quieter lessons is that careless speech is often a symptom of something deeper - insecurity, envy, or simply forgetting that every word is counted.

Nothing Goes Unrecorded

Allah (SWT) says:

مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ ١٨
"He [i.e., man] utters no word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]." (Surah Qaf 50:18)

That accountability follows us into ordinary conversations, group chats, and casual remarks, not only formal speech. Every tone and every whispered critique is recorded exactly as it was said.

Why We Speak Ill of Others

Often it is an attempt to feel larger by making someone else smaller - a symptom of a heart not yet settled in taqwa. Islam teaches that real dignity is never won through comparison. The Prophet (SAW) offered a better alternative: "If one of you sees something in his brother that he admires, let him pray for blessing for him." (Sunan Ibn Majah 3509)

He (SAW) also said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6136, Sahih Muslim 47)

A Habit Worth Building Early

We try to help our students notice the pull toward idle or critical speech before it becomes habitual, replacing it with either silence or a sincere du'a for the person in question.

May Allah (SWT) purify the hearts and tongues of our students, and make their speech a source of good wherever they go. Ameen.
