A reflection on Surah Al-Anfal 8:2 - understanding that iman naturally rises and falls, and how to respond when it feels low.
One of the most common worries students share, quietly, is that their faith does not always feel as strong as they think it should. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we try to reassure them that this experience is described in the Qur'an itself, not a sign of failure.
A Heart That Trembles
إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُهُۥ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ ٢
"The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely." (Surah Al-Anfal 8:2)
This ayah describes iman as something that increases in response to remembrance and recitation, which means, by implication, that it can also lessen when remembrance is neglected. Iman is not a fixed, unchanging quantity; it moves.
Responding to a Quiet Heart
Recognising this rhythm changes how we respond to a season of spiritual dryness: not with despair, but with a return to what raises iman, remembrance of Allah (SWT), recitation of His words, and reliance upon Him.
We encourage our students not to panic when their heart feels distant, but to treat it as a signal to return to dhikr and Qur'an, exactly what this ayah names as the cause of increase.
May Allah (SWT) keep the hearts of our students soft and responsive, and may He raise their iman whenever it dips, through His words and His remembrance. Ameen.
