A reflection on Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21 - how the Prophet's (SAW) gentleness with children during prayer models how we teach Salah today.
Long before he corrected, the Prophet (SAW) modelled. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we try to keep this order in mind when teaching young students Salah, example before correction, patience before precision.
An Excellent Pattern
Allah (SWT) says:
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
"There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern..." (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21)
When it comes to teaching children Salah, that pattern is one of remarkable gentleness.
Accommodating Innocence Within Worship
It is narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) used to carry Umamah bint Zaynab, his granddaughter, on his shoulder while praying. When he bowed, he put her down, and when he stood up, he carried her again." (Sahih al-Bukhari 516; Sahih Muslim 543) He did not interrupt a child's presence near worship. He made room for it.
Praise Effort, Not Precision
We encourage our youngest students' parents to let their children stand beside them in prayer without correcting every movement, to praise the effort of trying rather than the accuracy of imitation. A child who feels accepted within Salah, imperfections and all, is far more likely to grow attached to it out of love.
May Allah (SWT) help our students' parents teach Salah the way the Prophet (SAW) did, with patience, presence, and affection. Ameen.
