A reflection on Surah Al-Falaq 113:4 - how the Qur'an teaches believers to respond to unseen harm with refuge in Allah (SWT), not fear or obsession.
Not every difficulty a student or family faces has a visible cause. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we sometimes see a good student go through an unexplainably hard patch, and the temptation is always to search for a reason. Surah Al-Falaq addresses exactly this kind of hidden harm, and its response is calmer than we might expect.
Naming the Unseen Without Fearing It
Allah (SWT) says:
وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ ٤
"And from the evil of the blowers in knots." (Surah Al-Falaq 113:4)
This refers to sihr, sorcery practiced through blowing on knots. Allah (SWT) acknowledges that such harm exists, but what stands out is how He teaches us to respond to it: not with panic, obsession, or constant suspicion, but with refuge in Him. The believer accepts that unseen dangers exist while holding onto something greater, Allah's protection outweighs every one of them.
A Sunnah, Not a Constant Search
Aisha (RA) narrated that "the Prophet (SAW) ordered me, or someone else, to perform ruqyah for protection from the evil eye." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5738) The response Islam teaches is a practice, recitation, refuge, ruqyah, not an anxious hunt for hidden causes behind every hardship. Many people become trapped trying to explain every difficulty; the Qur'an instead redirects that energy toward Allah (SWT).
We encourage our students to hold this same balance: take the means Allah (SWT) has given (dua, the Mu'awwidhatayn, good company), and leave the rest to Him without becoming consumed by fear of what cannot be seen.
May Allah (SWT) protect our students and their families from every hidden harm, and settle their hearts in Him alone. Ameen.
