A reflection on Surah Al-Kahf 18:13 - what the young companions of the cave teach us about steadfastness before Ramadan.
Self-discipline is often treated as a matter of willpower alone, but the Qur'an frames it differently, as something Allah (SWT) strengthens in a sincere heart. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we find the story of the youths of the cave a fitting example as Ramadan approaches.
Young People Who Held Firm
نَّحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ نَبَأَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ فِتْيَةٌ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمْ وَزِدْنَـٰهُمْ هُدًى ١٣
"It is We who relate to you, [O Muhammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance." (Surah Al-Kahf 18:13)
The companions of the cave were young people who held to their belief under real pressure, and Allah (SWT) responded not by leaving them to manage alone, but by increasing their guidance because of their sincerity.
Discipline as a Fruit of Sincerity
This ayah reframes self-discipline: it is not purely a personal trait some people have and others lack, but something Allah (SWT) increases in a heart that turns to Him sincerely. The effort a student makes to hold a habit, to protect their prayer, to guard their tongue, is met with help from Allah (SWT), not carried alone.
We remind our students, especially our young Hifz students, that their own steadfastness is exactly this kind of sincerity Allah (SWT) rewards with increase.
May Allah (SWT) increase our students in guidance and steadfastness, just as He increased the youths of the cave. Ameen.
