A reflection on how the Prophet (SAW) taught that beautiful character, guarding the tongue, and a heart free of grudges are among the most beloved deeds to Allah (SWT).
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we try to remind our students often that Hifz is not only about the mouth and memory, it is also about the character that carries it. A student can recite beautifully and still need to work on how they speak to a sibling or hold a grudge against a friend. The Qur'an and Sunnah are clear that character is not a side lesson. It is central to the path.
An Ummah Known for Its Character
Allah (SWT) describes the believing community with this description:
وَلْتَكُن مِّنكُمْ أُمَّةٌ يَدْعُونَ إِلَى ٱلْخَيْرِ وَيَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
"And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful." (Surah Aali Imran 3:104)
Success, in this ayah, is tied directly to how a community carries itself, not only what it recites.
What the Prophet (SAW) Loved Most
The Prophet (SAW) said: "The most beloved of you to me, and the closest to me on the Day of Resurrection, are those with the best character." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2018) He also said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6136)
Good character shows itself in the quiet moments as much as the public ones: forgiving before sleeping, holding no envy toward what Allah (SWT) has given someone else, resisting an argument even when in the right. The Prophet (SAW) once described a man among the people of Paradise simply because, every night, he purified his heart of grudges before sleep.
A Daily Practice, Not a One-Time Lesson
We try to teach our students that guarding the tongue and softening the heart are daily spiritual victories, not abstract virtues. A student who resists gossip, who greets someone they don't usually greet, who forgives quietly before bed, is practising exactly what these ahadith describe.
May Allah (SWT) beautify the character of our students alongside their memorisation, and make them among those closest to the Prophet (SAW) on the Day of Resurrection. Ameen.
