A reflection on Surah Ash-Sharh 94:5-6 - Allah's (SWT) promise that ease does not only follow hardship, it accompanies it.
Every difficult season eventually passes, and what once felt unbearable often becomes, in time, the soil of real strength. This is not simply a comforting saying. It is a promise Allah (SWT) repeats twice in the same short passage.
Ease Within the Hardship, Not Only After It
Allah (SWT) says:
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
"For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease." (Surah Ash-Sharh 94:5-6)
The Arabic uses ma'a, "with", not ba'd, "after". Ease is not only promised once the hardship ends. It is already present alongside it, even if it is not yet visible to us.
Elevation, Not Just Endurance
Prophet Ayyub (AS) lost health, wealth, and family, yet his du'a was not a complaint but an expression of trust: "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful." (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:83) The Prophet (SAW) said: "When Allah wills good for someone, He afflicts him with trials." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5645) A trial endured with sabr does not simply pass. It changes the person carrying it.
Turning Healing Outward
We encourage our students, once they have come through a difficult period themselves, to reach out to someone else still in the middle of theirs, a word of comfort, a quiet du'a made on their behalf. What was once a private struggle becomes a source of compassion for someone else.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students the ease that lives within every hardship they carry, and make each trial a means of drawing nearer to Him. Ameen.
