Created to Choose: The Purpose Behind Every Test in Surah Al-Insan

14 October 2026

A reflection on Surah Al-Insan 76:2-3 - why Allah (SWT) gave us hearing, sight, and guidance before ever testing us.

We often remind students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy that a difficult day of revision is not a punishment, it is part of the test every life is built around. Surah Al-Insan explains exactly why Allah (SWT) designed life this way.

Tested, Never Abandoned Without Means

After reminding us that we once did not exist, the surah explains the purpose behind our creation:

إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًا
"Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing." (Surah Al-Insan 76:2)

We begin in weakness, formed and strengthened entirely by Allah (SWT). But the test was never given without the tools to face it:

إِنَّا هَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا
"Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful." (Surah Al-Insan 76:3)

Guidance Before Accountability

Allah (SWT) did not test us blindly. He gave hearing and sight as trusts, and made the way clear through revelation before ever holding us accountable for our response to it. The choice the verse ends with, gratitude or ingratitude, is not only spoken, it shows in how we use every blessing we are given.

The Prophet (SAW) said: "Wondrous is the affair of the believer... If something pleasing happens to him, he is grateful... If hardship befalls him, he is patient..." (Sahih Muslim 2999)

Every Choice a Small Test

We hope our students see their daily choices, how they speak, how they use their time, as small but real expressions of gratitude or ingratitude. The test is not one dramatic moment, it is built from ordinary decisions.

May Allah (SWT) help our students respond to every test, large or small, with gratitude rather than heedlessness. Ameen.
