A reflection on Surah Al-Fatihah 1:1 - why the Qur'an teaches us to begin every matter with Bismillah before a single command or story is revealed.
Before our youngest students learn to read a single surah, they learn to say Bismillah. It is one of the first phrases every child at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy carries into the Qur'an, and Surah Al-Fatihah shows why it comes first.
A Posture of the Heart, Not a Formality
The Qur'an opens with:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
"In the name of Allāh,1 the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.2" (Surah Al-Fatihah 1:1)
Before any command, story, or warning, Allah (SWT) teaches us how to begin. Bismillah is not decorative. It is a quiet declaration: I am not moving into this moment alone, but under the care of Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem. Ar-Rahman describes Allah's vast mercy reaching all of creation; Ar-Raheem describes His special, continuous mercy for those who turn back to Him.
What Is Cut Off Without It
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Every important matter that does not begin with Bismillah is cut off [from blessing]." (Sunan Ibn Majah 1894) A deed begun without Allah's Name is like a branch cut off from its root; the same deed begun with His Name becomes heavy on the scale.
We encourage our students to say Bismillah not only before recitation, but before every task of the day - eating, starting homework, beginning a new lesson - letting the words slow them down for a moment and remember whose Name they are carrying into it.
May Allah (SWT) place His blessing over every beginning we make in His Name, small or large. Ameen.
