A reflection on Surah An-Nur 24:27-28 - the Islamic etiquette of seeking permission and honouring another person's privacy.
Part of raising our students well is teaching them that respect shows up in small moments, how they enter a room, how they treat someone else's space. The Qur'an addresses this directly, and beautifully, in Surah An-Nur.
A Home Is a Trust
"O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants. That is best for you; perhaps you will be reminded [i.e., advised]. And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you. And Allāh is Knowing of what you do." (Surah An-Nur 24:27-28)
Allah (SWT) instructs believers not to enter houses other than their own until they ascertain welcome and greet the people inside, and if no permission is given, to turn away without offence, for that is purer for them. A home, the ayah teaches, is a place of privacy that deserves to be approached with humility, not entitlement.
Adab Before the Door Opens
This guidance shapes how a Muslim knocks, waits, and greets, always beginning with salam and never assuming access to another person's space. It is a small discipline with a large effect: it teaches a person to honour boundaries in every relationship, not only at a doorway.
We encourage our students to carry this same humility into every space they enter, a classmate's home, a teacher's office, a masjid. May Allah (SWT) make our students people whose presence brings comfort rather than intrusion, wherever they go. Ameen.
