A reflection on the opening of Surah Yusuf 12:4-6 - a father's wise caution, and the jealousy it could not fully prevent.
Surah Yusuf opens not with conflict, but with a dream, and a father's careful response to it. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we find this opening scene a quiet lesson in wisdom before the story's harder chapters begin.
A Father's Caution
قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تَقْصُصْ رُءْيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْوَتِكَ فَيَكِيدُوا۟ لَكَ كَيْدًا ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ ٥
"He said, 'O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.'" (Surah Yusuf 12:5)
Yusuf (AS) dreamt of eleven stars, the sun, and the moon, all prostrating to him. Yaqub (AS) understood the dream's meaning, that Yusuf would rise to great honour, but he also understood the danger of sharing it openly. His half-brothers, already envious, could easily turn that knowledge into resentment.
Wisdom That Still Was Not Enough
Yaqub's (AS) caution was wise, naming Shaytan directly as the one who exploits jealousy between people. Yet even this wisdom could not fully prevent what followed; his sons still plotted against their brother out of envy.
We remind our students that good counsel matters, but it does not remove another person's free choice. What we can control is our own response when envy or resentment arises in our own hearts.
May Allah (SWT) protect our students' families from the jealousy that divided Yusuf's household, and may He guard every heart from Shaytan's whispers. Ameen.
