On Tuesday, 20 May 2025, a large group of wide-eyed, curious DSQA learners stepped onto a few buses that would take them on a journey far beyond Mitchell’s Plain – a journey that would stretch across the stars.
Our destination? The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, nestled in the heart of Cape Town. But the real journey? That took place inside each child’s imagination as they soared through galaxies, learned about constellations, and gazed in wonder at the vastness of Allah’s creation.
🌍 A Day to Remember
From the moment we walked into the dome, there was an air of excitement. Learners whispered in awe as they looked up, the room dimming, the ceiling transforming into a sky full of stars. The planetarium show felt like magic – a stunning 360° experience that made the entire universe feel within reach.
We watched planets spin in orbit, travelled past Mars and Jupiter, and witnessed the beauty of our solar system unfold in front of us. Many learners couldn’t stop smiling; some had questions ready before the show even ended!
🌌 More Than Just a Science Lesson
This wasn’t just a school outing — it was an experience that brought learning to life. It reminded us of the verse in the Qur’an:
وَفِي السَّمَاءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ
“And in the sky is your provision and whatever you are promised.” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:22)
As we gazed at the stars and planets, it became clear: the universe is a sign from our Creator, pointing us to reflect, to ponder, and to be grateful.
💬 Reflections from Our Learners
“I didn’t know stars were that big!” – Aatiqah, Grade 5 (and Part-time Hifdh Student)
“Now I want to become an astronaut and see the moon myself, in real life!” – Muadh, Grade 4 (and Part-time Hifdh Student)
“I loved how we could ask questions after the show. I want to learn more about space now.” – Yusuf, Grade 6
It was heartwarming to see so many learners genuinely moved, their minds expanded, their hearts full of wonder.
🙌 Jazaakum Allah Khayran
We extend a heartfelt Jazaakum Allahu Khayran to our dedicated teachers, volunteers, and parents who made the trip possible. And to our DSQA learners – shukran for your good manners, your enthusiasm, and your respectful behaviour throughout the day. You made us proud.
As we returned to our Portland home, the conversation on the bus buzzed with excitement – learners talking about black holes, moons, and stars. We may have left the planetarium behind, but the spark of curiosity it lit within our children continues to glow.
